Sakıp Sabancı Mardin City Museum
Housed in a nineteenth-century former cavalry barracks near Republic Square, documenting Mardin’s multicultural urban life and traditional crafts.
Built in 1889 during the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid II as a cavalry barracks, this monumental stone structure now houses the Sakıp Sabancı Mardin City Museum and Dilek Sabancı Art Gallery. Across its vaulted lower gallery and upper exhibition hall, photographs, archival documents, and craft objects trace the daily life, stone and copper trades, soap making, silver filigree, and culinary traditions of Mardin’s diverse communities.
Why visit
To understand the historical background of the mansions, crafts, and neighborhood traditions you encounter across Old Mardin.
