HISTORY & ARCHITECTURAL CONTEXT

Safranbolu joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994. The valley quarter known as Çukur or Çarşı was its commercial centre. Houses, shops and public buildings survive together, offering a historic townscape rather than a single isolated monument.

Why visit

A rewarding place to notice how overhanging roofs, timber façades and small shops fit together. Exploring slowly makes the town’s conservation story easier to understand.

VISITOR TIP — WHAT NOT TO MISS

Step one lane off the main street to notice stone fountains and wooden shutter latches in the quiet cul-de-sacs.
