Kaymaklı Underground City
Kaymaklı Underground City, in the town once called Enegüp, is a broad tuff refuge with four floors open around its ventilation shafts.
The museum text says the rooms are linked by low, narrow, sloping galleries chosen to restrict an attacker’s movement, with stables on the first floor and a single-nave church with two apses on the second. The andesite block on the third floor was not carried in from outside; 57 grinding holes were cut into a layer left in place while the tuff was hollowed.
Why visit
Descend into Kaymaklı to read an underground defense plan of shafts, sloping corridors and an in-situ grinding stone before you return to daylight.
In Kaymaklı carry a backpack in front and wear closed shoes, because the low sloping corridors of the four open floors can force you to stoop.
