HISTORY & ARCHITECTURAL CONTEXT

The UNESCO management text records that conservation-plan studies for Uçhisar are in place alongside those for Ortahisar. The castle rock is a multi-level lookout hollowed through the tuff, and at dusk it separates the basin into valley floor, monastery slopes and distant volcanic rim.

Why visit

Climb Uçhisar Castle to stack the monastic valley of Göreme, the pigeon-house slopes and the far volcanic rim into one evening view.

VISITOR TIP — WHAT NOT TO MISS

Do not trust the upper rock-cut tunnel steps at Uçhisar in wet or icy wind, and do not promise the summit until the entrance confirms that day’s opening.
