Bergama Historic Arasta Bazaar & Çukurhan
The historic arasta that forms the commercial spine of the lower town, together with fourteenth- and fifteenth-century Çukurhan and its timber-gallery courtyard.
The provincial culture page places Çukurhan in the fourteenth or fifteenth century by its construction and notes the traces of a vaulted bazaar on the site. The arasta keeps carpets, copper, and everyday shopping in the shop row around that han, on one stone lane. Neighboring Taşhan, dated 1432, shows separately how the bazaar reused ancient blocks.
Why visit
To see the trace of a vaulted bazaar and the counters that still work, on one walk.
After the timber gallery in the Çukurhan courtyard, ask at an arasta counter about the knot density of a Bergama carpet.
