HISTORY & ARCHITECTURAL CONTEXT

After the Turkish period the settlement left the crest for the slopes and the plain, and Kale Quarter became the residential layer of that descent. Ground floors are cut stone and reused blocks; upper floors are built as timber projections or bağdadi infill. The narrow lanes trace both the old descent toward the Roman agora and the later Seljuk and Ottoman neighborhood additions.

Why visit

To see that the passage between the ancient terraces and the bazaar is still a lived neighborhood.

VISITOR TIP — WHAT NOT TO MISS

Walk down from the Acropolis exit in the morning, and do not repeat the same lanes uphill once the late light hits the facades.
