Bergama Grand Mosque
The Grand Mosque beside the Bergama stream, commissioned in 1399 by Bayezid I, with three domes over the central nave and a marble mihrab.
The central nave is covered by three domes and the two side naves by vaults; stairs up to the roof are hidden inside the narrowed wall of the east facade. The marble mihrab carries Seljuk influence, and the minbar and inscribed stone door keep the same care. Its single minaret separates the early Ottoman silhouette on the plain from the brick mass of the Red Basilica.
Why visit
To see an early Ottoman dome arrangement and a Seljuk-influenced mihrab still in worship, immediately beside the ancient city.
After looking closely at the mihrab marble, step into the courtyard and find the reused blocks in the minaret base.
