HISTORY & ARCHITECTURAL CONTEXT

The Selinos, which blocked the temple from joining its courtyard, was placed in water tunnels that have stayed in use since the Roman period. Upstream, a multi-arched stone bridge carries the stream under neighborhood thresholds and survives through later repairs. The bed beneath those arches and the vaults at the south outlet of the Red Basilica are two ends of the same flow.

Why visit

To understand that the water passing under the monument still appears, a short walk upstream, as a stone bridge.

VISITOR TIP — WHAT NOT TO MISS

Match the large upstream arch of the bridge with the tunnel mouths south of the Red Basilica on the same walk.
