Bey Quarter (Bey Mahallesi)
Gaziantep’s best-preserved historic residential quarter, defined by high stone courtyard walls, bay-windowed mansions, and vaulted kabaltı street passages.
Inhabited jointly by Muslim and Armenian families from the sixteenth century onward, the Bey Quarter showcases traditional Antep domestic architecture with high stone walls enclosing private courtyards (hayat) and cantilevered stone-and-timber bay windows overhead. Narrow basalt-and-limestone lanes threaded by vaulted passages known as kabaltı offer a quiet architectural contrast to the busy bazaars.
Why visit
To wander quiet stone cul-de-sacs beneath cantilevered mansions and vaulted kabaltı arches in late-afternoon light.
Pair your stroll through the quarter’s stone lanes with an exterior look at nearby Kurtuluş Mosque (former St. Mary’s Church).
