HISTORY & ARCHITECTURAL CONTEXT

Founded in 1638 by Turkmen Mustafa Ağa bin Yusuf, the Gaziantep Mevlevihane is one of Anatolia’s largest courtyard dervish lodges. Its semahane (ritual hall) and dervish cells now house a Vakıf Museum displaying Ottoman calligraphy, illuminated manuscripts, foundation carpets, and Mevlevi musical heritage. Immediately adjacent stands the historic Tahmis Coffeehouse, originally endowed in the seventeenth century to support the lodge and still celebrated for its menengiç coffee.
